Olive Klug Phoenix Concert reviews
A great night
Last night, Olive Klug played a full set and definitely show their age -- or maybe they don't, because their experience and talent as performers and not just musicians really shines through. Two years ago when they played the Music Circus with Augustana, the smaller band actually almost out-played them, and the sound was perfect -- vocals incomprehensible, drums drowning out everything. But this was undoubtedly the best of the five Olive Klug concerts I've been to in the past few years.
My only complaints are that it was too short, only about an hour and twenty including the encore, and I was really hoping for something more like "Ballad of El Goodo" for the encore than the quieter "Up All Night," even though they played that one really, really well. "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" was a good ending to the night, though a lot of the crowd didn't know the chorus (granted, it is a crazy song to begin with).
Regardless, if you have the chance to see Olive Klug (oh, and the other acts in the Roadshow this year are phenomenal; make sure you see Kasey Anderson & the Honkies) in a small venue like they seem to be doing once again this tour, do NOT pass them up. It'll be a great night of music and fun.
